State Of The Steelers: Steeler's Stumble

NFL

Last week’s performance against the Raiders was brutal especially considering all the opportunities the Steelers’ offense had. This week we break down the injuries, the o-line, and the outlook for the Steelers.

The Offensive Line

The offensive line was a hot topic entering the season and the current starting unit has not done much to dispel the concerns. Although on the stat sheet it shows only 2 sacks. the line allowed constant pressure preventing Roethlisberger and the receivers from getting it going. He had a 42.6 passer rating when under pressure. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will need to rely on the quick passing game until the o-line provides a cleaner pocket.

The running game was not much better as running back Najee Harris struggled to get much of anything going. The expectation was that Harris would pace the running game opening things up for Big Ben and the receivers. He has 36 yards after contact; he is getting ‘Saquon’ level of protection in the running game.

The combination of the pass and run blocking has put an unnecessary stress on the Steeler defense as they will more than likely be on the field more and as we know defenses can be exposed if they spend too much time on the field. If the Steelers hope to have playoffs in their future they must figure out a way to minimize the weaknesses shown by the o-line in the lst two weeks.

Injuries

Injuries are starting to pile up - latest recap:

LB TJ Watt - OUT - Groin

*Watt and later mentioned Highsmith are two of the key outside rushers for the Steelers so new Steeler Melvin Ingram should have a full workload.

LB Alex Highsmith - OUT - Groin

*Highsmith suffered a groin injury on Sunday’s loss to the Raiders - leaving pass rush thin

WR Diontae Johnson - OUT - Knee

*A lot is being made about the Steelers still going for it down by more than a touchdown, Johnson is expected to miss a few weeks

Outlook

The offensive line, defensive pass rush, and one of their best receivers are either out or struggling. Coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season and should get the team back on track. The adversity he has led this team through should be encouraging to bounce back. This game against the Bengals will show fans what the team is made of. ‘Next man up’ is the motto for this week’s matchup. Steelers have been very successful against the Bengals and this will continue this weekend.

Steeler Keys to Victory vs Bengals

  • Manufacture pass rush with many key contributors out
  • Get Harris going - even if it means the short passing game where he has had success
  • Quick passing game - get the ball out of Roethlisberger hand and prevent him from getting hit
  • Offensive line blocking long enough to allow routes to develop
