Savannah Ré Masters Intention On New Project ‘Formed’

Three-time JUNO Award-winning singer Savannah Ré is back. The critically acclaimed Canadian songstress released her new project, Formed, on May 14 via Matrimony Records. The 11-track project is the singer’s first release as an independent artist and is executive-produced by her Grammy-winning husband, Yogi the Producer. The offering follows her Polaris-shortlisted debut, Opia, in 2020, and her EP, No Weapons, in 2022.

In conversation with “Beyond The Record podcast, Ré shared that Formed was meant to be a continuation of No Weapons. The singer initially wanted to reference a portion of the biblical scripture “No weapons formed against me shall prosper” from Isaiah 54:17. Ré explained why she is happy with how the project was created despite not going along with her original plan.

“So much changed between No Weapons when I was planning to drop Formed,” she said, while adding it would have been “months later” after the 2022 EP dropped. “I  became independent, life changes, and as serendipitous as it sounds, Formed grew into its own project and its own message.”

The singer shared that she loves it when “guys love her music too,” but was intentional about who she especially wants to receive her work.

“I feel like in my projects prior, I’ve talked about my journey, and I always try to be as honest and as open as I possibly can,” she added. “But, I think this is the most forward I’ve been and the most for us I’ve been,” she continued, referring to her project being “for the girls.”

The project opens with “Bodies/Sweet,” where Ré references Isaiah 54:17 in the first verse over an acoustic-focused production that highlights her vulnerable yet confident lyrics and a surprise beat switch midway. “Go’ Head” is the unicorn of the project with its free and country-esque guitar rifts that give fans a fun summer-ready song that segues into the third track, “Nine Lives.”

On “East Side Demon,” Ré shows her sultry and sensual prowess, which sets the tone for her previously released track “Sex With My Ex.” Drake sampled the latter song on his 100 Gigs website. Ré shared that the experience was “crazy” having seen herself in videos on the website under her mentor and former label boss Boi-1da’s folder on the site. Based on the videos, it seemingly was from Drizzy’s Certified Lover Boy era, which that project dropped in 2021.

Ré goes on to provide airy vocals on “Blank Space,” while she expresses love quarrels on  “4EVER.”  The singer has some push and pulls in relationships with quotable wordplay on “Where You Left Me” and “100.” She wraps up her love quests on the faith-inspired love story track “Glory” that pulls on your heartstrings with the organ-laden production. Ré ends the project with “Made It Out,” as she expresses gratitude for her accomplishments while defeating the odds, while she basks in the triumph of her fortified faith.

The project is a masterclass for independent artists on intention, individuality, and purpose. Ré takes the lead in the featureless effort where all ears are deliberately placed on her to show the growth, creativity, and cleverness of the Canadian star. After collaborating with artists such as Babyface, Normani, Jessie Reyez, Leon Thomas, and Wondagurl, Formed is proof that she is not shying away from moments like this. Ré takes the spotlight because she knows it’s hers and, quite frankly — she’s earned it.

Formed is available on all streaming platforms now.
