Reggie Becton "California" Album Review
Reggie Becton is one of R&B’s best kept secrets. Hailing from PG County, Reggie Becton bet on himself and his talents half a decade ago by moving out to California to further his music career.
Drastic life changes like this come with family disagreements, relationship up and downs, depression, and much more. Reggie Becton’s California project has been five years in the making. Every emotion over the past five years has been packaged over the course of the twelve songs on the album. T
he album is sequenced in order, from Reggie’s arrival in LA, the cloud of depression that would soon cover him, to eventually overcoming. Battling the depression of not knowing many people in the city, running into people with ulterior motives, and being so far away from family with weed and faith. The message on the second track of the project, “Depresshun” is one that every upcoming artist must hear.
There’s no one way to success, but the ups and downs are inevitable. During the course of this project we see Reggie conquer one obstacle after another, whether it be different relationships, mental health, and his obstacles in the industry, Reggie comes out on top.
No one song on this project represents that better than the outro track “Monte Carlo (Outro)”. The song stands out sonically from the majority of the project, where some of the early songs on the project might sound darker and more somber, “Monte Carlo” is this luxurious Rick Ross x J.U.S.T.I.C.E League type production that perfectly captures Reggie’s level up over the past five years.
Sonically, Reggie has definitely made it a point of emphasis to draw from past R&B staple concepts such as his record with Ye Ali “Amnesia”, where the two take turns floating on the airy beat.
The chemistry is there, you can tell that they did this record in the studio together with the intention of flexing their vocal ability but songwriter skills as well, being able to both mesh with each other over guitars and passionate percussion. They say that you spend your entire life crafting your first full body of work, but it will be interesting to see how Reggie pivots from here, he’s set the bar extremely hard for himself.
And after hearing everything he’s had to overcome throughout these last five years on this project, it’s hard not to root for the R&B singer from PG County with his iconic orange beanie.
