Lowkey R&B Presents: The Reggie Becton Interview
Reggie Becton has been making a lot of noise in the world of R&B. He’s dropped a project, been featured on many playlists and editorials, and is still getting adjusted to moving from PG County, Maryland to the capital of entertainment: Los Angeles, CA. While the anticipation builds for Reggie’s upcoming project, I checked in with him to see what artistic decisions lead up to the creation of his EP “Thank You For Listenin’”, what his plans are for 2021 in terms of dropping a project, and how much California means to him.
What was the decision behind making “Thank You For Listening” 5 songs?
The decision to make TYFL happened after I wrote lonely I had some songs that I knew wouldn’t be used for the album I’m working on but I wanted the world to hear them... so when I realized these songs had a similar sound and that I wanted to do something to mark this great year it was a no brainer. For the last three years I have dropped an EP in the fall so I feel like that trinity is finally complete.
I’ve read up on you and read some comments you’ve said about the current state of R&B. Was the “Listenin’” Remix a response to the criticism that there are no more posse cuts in R&B?
A lot of my music is response to criticism of R&B but I don’t think Listenin remix was one I just feel like posse cuts are something I noticed were missing in today’s landscape we normally get duets in R&B but I wanted something that seemed bigger and a bit more fun, and conceptual. Wanted it to feel like when rappers are featured on songs it’s like everyone get to talk their shit how the see fit.
On “Lonely” you do talk about your love history, is it easy for you to open up about that kind of stuff in the music or does it bring back unpleasant memories of what happened in those past relationships?
Great question! I think I’ve come to the point where I’m finally comfortable writing from the most vulnerable place I can tap in to in the moment so any time I’m writing I’m trying to be as vulnerable and honest as I can be because I think that’s where the true power and greatness of my music will come from. That is how it will connect with others. At times it bring back old feelings but I think when I’m writing about it normally helps me move past those feelings.
So you must be feeling like the music we’re going to receive on the upcoming album will contain your most best & personal content yet right?
Exactly man and I’m so happy it’s panning out that way I remember while making each EP for the last three years trying to dive deeper in each one and now this album I’ve been working on has the most personal songs of my journey dealing with life and love for the past 4 years in California.
What information can you give us fans on this upcoming album release?
The album has been in the making for last 4 years and it is titled California. I wanted to title that because moving to California has been such a transformative period of my life.
Has being in California over the last couple of years affected your sound sonically in any way, versus being on the east?
Yeah without a doubt I think Cali allowed me to work with a variety of people and just test drive different sounds until I was able to find one.

Reggie has been able to build a name for himself from coast to coast. An album is in the works and is scheduled for a late summer/early fall release as of now. His EP, “Thank You For Listenin’” brought in a large amount of praise, so much so that he’s one of Apple Music’s “Artists We’ll Love in 2021” selections. Everything is lining up for the PG County R&B singer and he’s looking to capitalize on this momentum with a signature project to take his career to the next level. It’s only a matter of time. “Thank Y’all For Reading”.
